Newport store’s winter show is all about the trends

November 20th, 2009, 12:00 pm by Candice Shih, Staff Writer

solutions-slidesIf you want a ladylike cardigan or khaki pants, this is not the place for you. Solutions instead will offer the latest trends plus a massive array of denim choices.

The Newport Beach boutique held its winter show on Thursday, featuring leggings, holiday looks, day-to-night suggestions, and, of course, denim.

Solutions, which stocks 150 styles of jeans, sent down the runway Rock & Republic, Genetic, AG Adriano Goldschmied, William Rast, Pur, Blank, Hudson and J Brand.

And it wasn’t shy to highlight pieces such as the crop top pictured and lace bike shorts.

“I want to stand out and be different from other boutiques,” said owner Susan Cianciulli Bailey. “I want to be the Fred Segal or Kitson of O.C.”

Alexis Bellino, the newest cast member of “The Real Housewives of Orange County” and a model in Solutions’ spring show, was scheduled to make an appearance. But the Newport Coast mom didn’t make it because of a viewing party Thursday celebrating her TV debut.

Your go-to guide on how to wear boots

November 20th, 2009, 6:00 am by J. GALLEGO

So many cute boots to choose from, so many ways to wear them wrong.

What’s a girl to do?

When it comes to boots it’s all about proportion. That means getting the height, cut and length of your boot to balance, not match, not offset, not augment, but balance with the length of your dress, skirt or pants.

Here are a few tips …

The ankle boot: I am die-hard fan of the ankle boot (also called “booties” when they hit just below the ankle bone and “shooties” when they rest well below the ankle but lay over the top of the foot).

The right one can be worn with pants — cropped or long, wide, baggy or skinny — or dresses and skirts, including the circle, bubble, A-line, mini and pencil. Below is a little sample of  outfits for every occasion that I think works well with my fave bootie of the season …

The key to the ankle boot is to make sure there is enough leg showing between the top of the boot and the bottom of the skirt or pants. Otherwise your legs will look short and stumpy. The heel should be high because it is a rare girl who can pull off a flat bootie with cropped pants or a skirt.

New term alert: Holiday underwear

November 19th, 2009, 3:00 pm by Candice Shih, Staff Writer
santa-panty

Dillard's "I Love Santa" hipster panty is $6.

It’s always the folks in marketing or public relations who come up with head-scratchers like this.

Last time, it was “shoulder cleavage.” This week, I got an e-mail promoting “holiday underwear.”

You know, I understand if you get special undies for Valentine’s Day or an anniversary. And I also understand that some guys wear holiday-themed boxers.

But I’m not sure there’s a market for women’s holiday lingerie.

And there’s almost no one I want giving me underwear as a Christmas gift.

Fashion spoilers from ‘Sex and the City’ sequel

November 19th, 2009, 12:00 pm by Candice Shih, Staff Writer

With “Sex and the City,” the plot is almost secondary to the fashion. And just as fans want to know what happens to Carrie and Big in the second movie coming out next spring, we want to know what the gals of NYC are wearing in it.

Here are some answers.

First up, check out these Jee Vice sunglasses below that Carrie wears.

These shades called Heated are $140-$175, and the line is carried by Bloomingdale’s at Fashion Island. Click here to see a pic of Carrie in the orange version.

Beauty expert’s top 10 holiday picks

November 19th, 2009, 6:00 am by Candice Shih, Staff Writer

nicky-picks-slidesYou might only know it in the evening, but we’re heading into shorter, colder days.

Brit beauty expert Nicky Kinniard shared her top 10 picks for the holiday season during a stop to Space NK Apothecary at Bloomingdale’s at Fashion Island on Wednesday. Check out the slide show to see her recommendations.

Kinniard, who hand picks all the products for her 63 U.K. and 13 U.S. stores, suggested the best way to adjust to colder, drier weather is to hydrate skin topically and internally.

In the winter, “very often the skin reacts and can be dull or ashy-looking,” she said. Using a face mask or brightening serum can reverse that tendency.

Drinking water, replacing coffee with green tea and avoiding salty food will help, too. Pinch the back of your hand to test the springiness of your skin, she said.
